Dear friends and partners,
Greetings in Christ! As we enter the third quarter of 2025, I’m excited to share how God has been at work here in Gulu through my ministry with JLH Uganda. Your prayers and support have been invaluable. For those unfamiliar with my work, I serve part-time, focusing on Church Community Mobilisation (CCM), equipping leaders and churches to bring transformation to their communities.
For the past three years, my focus has been to strengthen the capacity of church leaders in the Nwoya Baptist Association. Many of these leaders have little to no formal education, so we use a specially designed oral theological curriculum that helps them learn effectively in their context.
It has been a long journey filled with both challenges and joys. Despite delays and obstacles, I’m thrilled to share that we have just celebrated the graduation of 45 leaders! This milestone fills us with gratitude and reminds me of Ecclesiastes 3: 11, “God makes everything beautiful in its time.” Give thanks for a joyful graduation day, and please pray that these graduates will use their new skills to disciple others and advance God’s mission.
Alongside this, I also coordinate Church Community Mobilisation (CCM) in Gulu and surrounding districts. Currently, 18 churches are actively engaged in CCM, learning how the process transforms individuals, churches, and entire communities.
Not all churches progress at the same pace. Some are thriving, while others face challenges, especially since these churches are scattered across wide distances with poor roads. This makes regular visits and close mentoring difficult. Please pray for our local facilitators who guide these churches. Their work is vital, and they need encouragement as they navigate fluctuating participation and challenging circumstances.
It has been deeply encouraging to see churches begin to recognise their God-given resources and take ownership of community development initiatives. Increasingly, CCM is expanding beyond Baptist churches to include denominations like the Church of Uganda and the Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG), a sign of unity in Christ’s mission.
Serving with my family in Gulu is one of my greatest blessings.
Our oldest son, Dawn Okello, is finishing Grade 6 this year and preparing to move to Grade 7. Please pray for us as we navigate this transition, particularly in finding the right school and providing for his tuition. He’s growing so fast, he’s now as tall as I am!
Our second-born, Micaiah Okello turned 11 in July and is in Grade 5. He loves music and plays the Cajon during worship at our church, University Community Church near Gulu University.
Our youngest, Carissa P'Okello, turned one year old in June. She’s now learning to walk and talk, bringing great joy to our family. Truly, she is a surprise gift from God.
Phionah and I continue to serve at our church, thankful for the privilege of being used by God for His glory.
Please join us in prayer for these specific needs:
- Graduation of Leaders: Ask God to bless the graduates of Church Engagement Project and inspire them to use their knowledge for discipleship, and to serve in other initiatives like CCM.
- CCM Facilitators: Pray for strength, motivation, and perseverance for our facilitators. May they continue to inspire churches and remain faithful despite challenges. Pray for stronger churches to be an encouragement to those that are struggling.
- Family Needs: Pray for our family, especially for Dawn’s school transition, both financially and in finding a suitable school.
- Continued Growth: Pray for unity and fruitfulness as CCM expands to other denominations, and for churches to grow as agents of transformation.
Thank you for standing with us through your prayers and support. Because of you, pastors are being equipped, churches are being mobilised, and communities are experiencing transformation. We deeply value your partnership in God’s mission here in northern Uganda. I hope that you enjoy the photos I have shared.
With gratitude
Jimmy & Phionah Okello
