In the northern part of Uganda where BMS and JLH are supporting the farming communities, the farmers have two seasons of planting crops. The first season begins at the end of March through to July, and the second season begins August through to December.
The planting season is on! The Agribusiness Livelihoods project is supporting 100 families to improve their crop production so that families have enough food. The project also enables families to increase their income through the sale of the crops.
The farmers have been supported with improved seeds, such as maize seeds, groundnuts, cabbage, onions, soybeans and rice, amongst others. The choice of the crops is based on the needs of the families, their experience and their ability to manage the crops.
All the participants are undergoing agronomic training so that they learn more about how to take care of their crops and manage them well until point of sale. The areas include the planting, weeding, pest control, fertilizer use (if any) and post-harvest handling. The major targets are to increase on food security and income as a result of better farming approaches being practiced by the farmers.
This year the families being supported are in Nwoya district in the area of Corner Nwoya, Lukai, Anaka, Bidin. They are linked to the Churches.
These churches have been enrolled into the Church and Community Mobilisation Process (CCMP) so that their capacity is built through the process and rooted in biblical principles. These principles are all geared towards building self-supporting resilient families with the ability to support one another and thrive using their God-given resources.
This families will be role models to follow in the communities and they will lead and drive the development in their areas. We expect that the training and the teaching will help to strengthen the churches which are part of the project and the CCMP process.
All the crops have been planted, weeded and the families are now carrying out the second weeding. The first harvest will start coming out in early July for the early maturing cro varieties.
The crops are looking very good and the rainfall is promising as the farmers wait for their harvest and join in thanking the Lord as promised in the Bible, ‘The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless you in the land. Deuteronomy 28:8’. The book of James 5:7 ‘Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.’
Trusting God for his provision is the key as he provides and sustains our life, our efforts and gives us the peace and the hope to see tomorrow. We pray that the Lord will keep you and take care of you.
Thank you so much for the partnership, the sacrifice the gift and prayers that you have been able to offer for this ministry. God is working out wonders through you to these communities. Pray for good rain, health and peace.
Blessing to you all
