April in Thailand this year, was the hottest on record. Fortunately, we were on holiday in the UK for most of it, but we returned to powerful storms and drenching rain. The rainy season has come very early this year and we are enjoying the coolness that it brings.
In Wang Daeng, work has continued on the building project and it is now almost finished. All being well, we hope to move in during July, and the official opening ceremony will be in October. We give thanks for answered prayer, that there have been no accidents, our relationships with the neighbours are good and we are so far debt-free. We are praying that the place would be filled with the glory, the presence and the peace of God, and of course with many new believers.
At the beginning of May, the house-church in Ban Dara celebrated its 1st anniversary of meeting for Sunday morning worship. In that time we have seen many new people come to faith and leaders emerging. We have been trying to start a youth group on a Saturday evening with mixed results. The teenagers come along for a while and then stop, but the children and young-at-heart adults really enjoy it! Please pray for the local youth and that we can find ways to reach out to them.
Finally, in Tao Hai, the English classes have begun again - please pray for opportunities to share faith with both students and parents. Helen is also 'teaching' a two-year-old boy which is fun, and we are getting to know his family well. We also go visiting in the neighbourhood and have had numerous opportunities to tell Bible stories and pray for the sick.
We had a wonderful holiday in the UK during April. It was so nice to be able to spend quality time with friends and family, especially with our children and their spouses. Of course we really enjoyed getting to know our precious little granddaughter, Juliette, and a major highlight of the trip was to be there for her dedication. We also happened to be there for pivotal moments in our children's lives: DJ and Hannah made the decision to join Wycliffe Bible Translators and will begin their studies in September; and Josie got a great new job and we were able to help her find a house to rent, just 10 minutes walk from her workplace. Our trip to Ireland with Josie and Niall was fantastic and we enjoyed unexpected, glorious sunshine - the first good weather of the year apparently - Praise God!
Aside from buildings, the 'real' church in Wang Daeng is also growing, especially in terms of maturity. We were so impressed at a recent medical service outreach, to hear the believers sharing their stories of faith with friends and neighbours. Moses and Mary are doing a great job in training the young leaders in the church. The youth have taken charge of the church worship each Sunday and they are also able to lead Bible studies, teach Sunday school and do evangelism. One young man, Team, has just begun studying at a Bible College in Chiang Mai - an amazing turnaround in his life.
Another church we are responsible for mentoring is in Maesan, Sukhothai - they are from the Mien hilltribe. They have been without a pastor for several years and numbers have dwindled considerably. We currently visit there twice a month and are encouraged by their faith, but we are not able to spend time discipling or doing evangelism with them. Ideally they need a full-time pastor living in the village in order for the church to grow, both in numbers and in spiritual maturity. Please pray.
Please pray for the church in Wang Daeng - for continued growth, a heart for evangelism and for the move to the new building in July.
Pray for the church in Ban Dara to grow in numbers and in faith, and for wisdom in reaching out to local youth.
Pray for English classes, visiting and evangelism in Tao Hai. Pray especially for Somsong & Chalong, Roon & Sak and Yupin.
Pray for our pastors, Moses, Mary and Areerat, as well as for ourselves, to have wisdom, energy, health and strength.
Pray for a pastor for the church in Maesan. Pray for their children's outreach service on 7th July.
Praise God for a marked improvement in Best, who we requested prayer for last time. Pray for her husband Amnart and her two children. Pray that as a family they would all come to know Jesus.
Blessings in Christ
